Forum:
Currently running standard 215/80 15 tyres on standard 15/6 steel rims. Seems that the only tyres available in this size are generally a bit useless. Am wanting to use General AT2s or BFG etc.
Question is then, what size tyre can I change to? I want to stick as closely as possible to the standard, and I discovered that 225/75 15 would make the diameter only 7mm smaller which amounts to only 4 revolutions per kilometre less than standard. Will this size fit though?
Spoke to a tyre specialist yesterday but he seemed to think they would be too wide, couldn't really explain why though.
The way I see it, they are only 10mm wider overall, which must account for only 5mm each side of the wheel. Would they fit on a 6 inch wheel and would there be any clearance problems with such a small increase in width?
Your views would be greatly appreciated.
Everyone else who I have spoken to seems to be making this far more complicated that it needs to be, but can't really explain why. Am I mising something?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks very much for your
Thanks very much for your advice.
I hope you don't mind if I ask why that size though, as I am keen to understand this?
It seems to me that 235s are wider still than 225s, plus their overall diameter will be rather more as opposed to rather less (in the case of 225s) than the originals. Therefore, I would imagine that the chances of fouling against anythig are slightly higher. Plus, the speedo would read a bit slower as opposed to a bit faster, which I would prefer.
Presumably 235s would also be a bit more of a stretch on 6" rims than the 225s.
I'm not questioning your advice as I'm sure you're more knowledgeable than me on this subject, but I'm just curious as to the reasons why you would go for 235s rather than 225s which would be slightly closer to the size of the originals, and smaller (diameter), rather than larger than the riginals.
There's clearly more to this subject than meets the eye.
Thanks again.
not many problems
we run 235/75/R15 BFG all terains in 3 F78's (have had them on F73's with no problems as well) on the other truck we have (F73) there are 235/75/R15 Insa turbo Sahara's i have noticed very occasionally that if the front are on full lock and with some upwards travel on the suspension they catch, but this is only very occasionally.
I believe there was an option to have 235's fitted from new as the 2 we had new have always had these fitted. Having run these for minimum 10 years on various fourtraks there hasnt been any problems that i can remember.
There are three tyre sizes
There are three tyre sizes fitted to all Fourtrak's, these are 215X15, 235/75X15 and 265/70X15.
If you have steel rims you can fit the 215X15 or the 235/75X15's.
If you have the alloy rims you can run the 235/75X15 or the 255/70X15.
Forget BFG's and look at Cooper tyres instead, premium brand but much cheaper, and perform just as well as all the leading brands.
Look on the Tyre Spec website for details.
Tyres for F73 Fourtrak
I had a new set of 31.10.50 BFG all terrains fitted to mine a few months ago. Had them on my previous F78 for about 4 years and covered more than 50k miles no problem. Had them fitted to my wifes F78 last year too. Can't recommend enough - You just need to lift the front end up a bit to clear mudflaps on full lock.
Thanks for the advice
Thanks for the advice everybody.
Now just need to find somewhere with some General AT2s in stock. There seems to be a shortage but apparently they will be back in the country in a couple of weeks.
Snow will likely be gone by then and won't need them. Typical!
The best tyres for snow are
The best tyres for snow are normal road tyres, or specialised winter tyres, not BFG's which are an off road tyre.
It is a fallacy, and a well proven one, that mud tyres are best in snow, due to their open tread and wide sipes they have much less ground surface contact.
