sportrak starts then cuts straight out

Forum:

Just bought a sportrak it starts then cust straight out after a few times it starts then runs same when hot or cold.
Tryed swapping the coil same
swapped the rectifior same
checked the dizzy cap and rotor arm same
fuel relay seems to be working as you can feel it cutting in
Got live to ignition switch and its ok

Not electrical

Fuel blockage.
It starts so there is no electrical problem. It stops due to fuel starvation. When not running sufficient fuel arrives to start and then it again runs short of fuel.
First remove the air filter.Check if it is clogged. Renew it if it looks suspect. You can run Sporty for a few minutes without an air filter. This check if the filter is the problem. Then replace the filter.
IMHO start by checking the fuel supply at the engine. Remove fuel pipe. With extreme caution and with a COLD engine, check the fuel supply.
The result should indicate if the next check is at the fuel tank or the engine's injection.

TIP ... a blockage at the engine can sometimes be removed by excluding air from the pistons.
1. Remove air filter.
2. Make a thick pad from none-fiberous cloth. Cotton is best.
3. Start the engine and rev it high but not flogging it!
4. Use the thick cotton pad to choke off the air supply to the engine at the air intake of the air filter. This will create a vacuum which will 'suck' at the fuel ports. It often sucks out any blocked jets. Try not to starve the engine which will make it stop.

tested as sugested

It starts then stops even when warm so tested what you said.
New air filter new spark plugs in, fuel filter pipe removed when you just crank for a split second there is about 1/4 pint of petrol comes through the filter at full flow.
Did the rev and block off test about 8 times and still the same intermitting start problem hot or cold.
Pulled a pipe off from the manifold to a unit that is located on the steering pump and the revs went up with the greater air flow but when went to start it still the same intermitting starting.
Sprayed all round the pipes and manifold no change in engine running so no leaks found

fuel delivery type?

carb or injection?

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Remove a spark plug.

Next time it stops pull out a spark plug [I assume it has the correct type of plug]and report its condition. Is the plug wet or dry? What colour is the plug electrode and is it gapped at 1 mm Unknw

Whilst 'stopped' check for a spark on the plug:-
I assume you know how to ground the electode whilst getting someone to turn-over the engine.

It cranks then fires then

It cranks then fires then cuts out second crank it fires and runsb its efi injection has it got a cold start umit that might cause this plugs seem to keep there spark

Is the plug wet or dry?

When stop fault happens, try a restart then pull a spark plug and check if it is wet with fuel or is it dry. What colour is the electrode? Also did you use the handbook and confirm you have the correct plug number printed on each spark plug.

will check tomorrow if plug

will check tomorrow if plug is wet or dry dont have a hand book to check if they are the correct plugs will have to try and find on the computer.
