Back Axle Problem - F78

Forum:

Hi Folks. Sorry that my first post is a cry for help! The trailing arm mounts on the rear axle on my F78 have tonight sheared off just above where they are welded onto the axle casing and the diff is now pointing downwards at 45 degrees. I

if you undo the shocks at

if you undo the shocks at axle end you should be able to jack it back in place i recon- also a bit strange that they both broke at the same time, woud have thought that one broke first putting to much pressure on the other side?

Thanks

I think that you are right. Her Ladyship was driving the Trak at the time and reports two bangs from underneath. (This was after the bang from above after she had driven into and knocked off the Maximum Height sign in a Paigton multi storey with the roofrack. So, all in all not a good day!. On reflection I think I'm going to take the axle off and overhaul it. This will give me easy access to the trailing arm mounts and allow me to spot any other nasties and generally check things out.

This is quite a common

This is quite a common problem on an f78, normally due to heavy towing (or the mrs pulling away too quickly). It happened on mine, i welded a seamless tube between the chassis rails 2-3 inches back from the original, and welded new brackets for the anti twist bars and brake pipe. One tip is to measure everything before cutting anything off, as any amount out on chassis rail will be double the amount of the wheel.

Hope this helps?
