My sportrak el efi 1600 injection
has always started fine - until today that is. Now although the engine turnsover fine, it will only fire a tiny bit ( i mean barely), followed by more turnover with no more firing at all. If I leave for a while, and then just turn the key quickly (i.e. for a short burst) it will almost fire.
-checked Fuel, first option i did, got fuel!!
-Spark plugs are sparking.
-keep thinking it's a fuel problem. But can't work out why it would not work now as it was working fine yesterday.
-New Battery 2 week ago.
-earthing might be one idea as i was changing the battery the other week and this might have disturbed something.
-fuel pump and filter are the last options i am thinking. fuel pump ant easy to get too.
any ideas welcome

hey people. well i took of all the Cables sprayed any cable that should be connecting. reconnected everything, charged the battery and all started up OK,
all very strange, the mystry still might come back to bite me.
don't get me wrong this babe has done me very well for 12 years and i just can't let her go.
Happy new year people
Re: Non Starter...
Just to say mine does the same, if it's freezing cold or hot it's fine, but on damp days it just wont start... I replaced the distributor cap and rotor arm, but didn't help. I then tried starting it a few days later when it was icy out and it started fine. Think it's time to get a full service, if I can get it started again!!!
Dave
Just been out with a can of WD40 and sprayed all the HT leads and it started first time!!! Bloody damp weather!!!
well talking to my 2 machanic
well talking to my 2 machanic friends they are talking about a sensor that is located on the gear box that set the jeep in motion and is a know problem for this type. i think he called it the crank shaft sensor.
i will update with more info when i know about the issue and the resolution, so nice to have a think tank.
i will not be beaten this car is my baby for 12 years and with a clean MOT this year i knew i would have a few little issues to solve. haha ant it always the way.
One HT lead is probably tracking to earth.
I guess you have a cracked HT lead due to the severe cold weather. Engine starts but the 'spark' is lost throught a HT cracked lead.
One method to spot it is to open the bonnet at night - in the complete dark. Get someone to use the ignition key and you watch the HT leads. There is every possibility you will see a 'flash' along one of the leads. The spark escapes and runs to earth so the spark plug, or plugs, dies.
The above might show the HT leak. You could WD40 to temporarily bridge the leak but its use might be limited if the crack is more than a pinhole. If so buy a suitable length of HT lead, cut it to lengths and renew the HT leads. Alternatively spend considerably more and get a new distributor cap with leads already fitted.
thank you, you have one of
thank you,
you have one of my other ideas. due to the weather and me going out today after 2 days of no rain and the Jeep fired up first time.
to be honest this is melting my mind with the randomness of will it work will it not.
i have a friend coming over tomorrow to see what he thinks, michanic so should have some more ideas on the board soon. lol

I had exactly this - wouls
I had exactly this - wouls struggle to start on wet days, then run with a bit of a misfire. Then wouldnt start at all, so changed LT lead and problem solved
