Bottoming rear suspension. F78. 1999

Forum:

Is it normal for a well maintained one to crash through to the bump stops with two weeks shopping on board? Ride height is fine. No broken coils. No leaking dampers; plus dampers control the axle properly. We brace ourselves when approaching known undulations. We have a 94 F73 that doesn't do it so readily, & our 17 yr old Merc 300 saloon never does it & we have had far more weight in the boot + back seat of that!
Maybe it is characteristic?
Your thought welcome gentlemen as it spoils an otherwise great car.

Doesn't sound right to me.

springs r beat i hada replace

springs r beat i hada replace mine every time i had a trailer on she was sittin on the stops. new springs made a fair differance.

The problem is the springs,

The problem is the springs, over time they structurally deteriorate due to their design, and is a common thing with most 4X4's. This makes them softer which puts more load on the shocks, and wears the shocks out.

The net result is a suspension which is very soft, and the only solution is replacement of the springs and shocks.

Under off road conditions it is not uncommon to hit the bump stops as the suspension is designed to do this, and the reason bump stops are fitted. It should not do it on road though.
