mystery 4WD problem

Please could someone point me in the right direction...

My 4WD is not working. I've read many posts but i'm still stumped.
The green light DOES come ON (push button on dash), but no power getting to the front wheels.

Brand new manual hubs have been fitted and are working.

If you jack up the front (both wheels off the ground) and turn a wheel (with hubs set to 4x4)the prop shaft to the transfer box turns, BUT the other wheel does not move. The same happens if you turn the other wheel.

how is this possible?

I'm assuming the lack of 4WD is due to something wrong with the front diff? but don't understand these symptoms.

any help would be much appriciated.
many thanks

What you have described with

What you have described with the front axle is normal. When you spin one wheel the 'drive' your creating takes the path of least resistance through the diff. If the transfur is in 4x4 (and working), and the rear wheels are on the ground, then the opposit wheel should spin in the opposit direction to the wheel you are spining.
From what you have described, if the transfur is in 4X4 when you are doing this then the trabnsfur is not working properly. If transfur is in 4X4 properly then with the front wheels in air and rear wheels on floor you should only be able to move the front prop a minimal amount of rotation in either direction.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

aarr of course, thanks. It's

aarr of course, thanks.
It's at the garage again now after being allegadly 'fixed' a month ago.
I took it in originally as the 4WD light was not coming on and the 4WD wasn't working either.
They rewired it in the end (which brought the time clock to life too), green light now works.
They said the 4WD was now working, but the hubs were knackered. As mentioned now has new manual hubs and they are working fine.

so it's back at the garage and they have some explaining to do... hopefully they won't charge me to diagnose they same fault for a second time.

I wish i had done some more thorough testing, to diagnose myself, but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

thanks for your help, i'll post when i get a resolution.

its the gearbox solenoids.....

well the mystery/misery continues....

the garage sent my fourtrak to a gearbox specialist and they have said that there are 2 solenoids in the gearbox that need repacing to make the 4WD work.

They have quoted me £500 (£250 for parts, £250 Labour) to fix it. Ouch.. does this sound reasonable?

thank you in advance.

there are 2 on the drivers

there are 2 on the drivers side of the gearbox high up if you lie under neath you can see small black rubber pipes ,going into them very fiddly but can be done ,can of wd40 with straw try and get pipes of and start it up ticking over fine and spray the wd in the pipe or the solinoid ,this has worked or me on a few ocasssions seems to be when fourtrac is laid up for a bit,try it and save a few bob.if it works mind and press the button once and a while to keep it free.

Rocky/Fourtrak 4WD solenoids

Hi
I joined the website because I had the usual solenoid problem with 4WD activation on my petrol F80. Having bought the manual from the website, I saw what seemed the ideal solution, except that it doesn’t work with only one valve because once a chamber has a vacuum, it stays there and defeats all efforts to choose the alternative chamber. Now, I have bought 2 3-way valves and 3 meters of tubing. The two valves are to handle the supply of negative pressure to the 2WD and 4WD chambers of the original system.
The valves obviously have two closable input/outputs and one common input/output; the common input/output supplies the 2WD and 4WD chambers with negative pressure or ambient air, depending on which one of the closable input/outputs is open. These are supplied either from ambient air or the negative pressure from the original tubing. Access to ambient air is a necessity so that the new selection can move the diaphragm from its 4WD to 2WD position, or vice versa. In 2WD or 4WD it is worth deselecting before selecting the new operation, to remove the negative pressure from the relevant chamber.
One of the three new tubes supplies negative pressure to a ‘T’ connection and from there to the two valves. There is a second tube from one valve to the A (2WD) chamber and a third tube from the second valve to the B (4WD) chamber.
That is the extent of the modification. The solenoids are by-passed, which means amongst other things, that the 4H button on the dash is inoperative, but I never used that mode anyway. Expense, in total, roughly 60 Euros, ₤50 or 40$A.
Most importantly, it works. As does the 2H –N – 4L lever. Hope this helps.

4wd how it works

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!
