Direct Line WARNING

Forum:

Hi all. I just had a falling out with Direct Line car insurance. I rang to ask if fiting non-standard tyres (IE more agresive) for bad weather and towing trailers out of fields would be a problem. The tyres themselves were deemed to be fine. However as I had admited to them that my car was used off the road their in house underwriter canceled my insurance. Even though the 'off road use' was explained to involve parking and collecting my trailer from a friends flat grass field. Even when I said OK if it's a problem I'll find somewhere else to park the trailer, or get my friend to bring the trailer to the road by tractor the desision remained. I must say I was somewhat miffed by the whole afair. Anyway I just wanted to share. If you use your 4X4 for anything other than pure road work, and your insurer is Direct Line, you might want to change companies. I wonder how they feel about driveways? They are not roads after all.

i use them

direct line fully comp me and my totally bog standard 406, but i would never use them for anything else but domestic vehicle usage , my off roading stuff is nfu- costly but one of the best for anything modded and dirty, always got to read the small print, sorry.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

thats absolutely

thats absolutely ridiculous.... i drive my car onto the lawn to wash the road dirt off... i occasionally park on the school playing field.... i go to car boot sales in a field...most of the national trust car parks i use have grass areas. i could understand them limiting comprehensive liability to third party only when off tarmac... but withdrawing cover completely is silly

Insurance

Having, just had to replace my’92 Fourtrak, and seeking alternative insurance, for a L/R TD5 Defender, and with complications with the owner, my disabled partner, with no driving licence and with me being the designated driver, none of the online insurers would even look at the proposal, but the NFU came up with a good quote, which we accepted, and we stated we would be off roading , as in the driving of “green lanes” and “byways open all traffic”. The NFU is rather selective in where you live, more advantageous if you are in a small town or a country dweller.

I believe “BOATS” and “Green Lanes” are subject to all normal traffic regs, and as thus are highways, though unsurfaced.

Any green lane which has

Any green lane which has legal vehicular access is defined as a highway. Any vehicle using them must have full documentation and a licensed driver as with any other UK road.
