Sportrak Timing with or without vacum pipe

Hi all
Sportrak 1991 injection.
Can someone please tell me if I pull off the vacuum pipes on the distributor when I time up the car with my strobe or leave them on and set it up. And am i right in thinking i advance the strobe gun up to +3 on the dial.

Pull it off and plug the pipe for static timing with a strobe, leave it on and vary the revs for dynamic timing.
The specific dynamic timing revs should be available from dealers.
