Forum:
Right I'm back again to solve this pesky f**k*ng 4wd problem. I have taken off cleaned and serviced the auto hubs as per web page instructions. There is little to no corrosion etc so all seems too be fine there.
The front prop locks when we put the lever in 4wd.
So the problem seems to be somewhere between the transfer box and the hubs.
Could it be the front diff or does anyone have any other suggestions?
My mechanic,(Good friend, still despite this on going problem)reckons the hubs are ok and the transfer box is doing its job so what the f**k is wrong.
Sorry for the language but my father has a freelander with the rear prop removed(2wd) and I had to borrow it to tow a horsebox last week, o the humility!!!!
PLEASE HELP.....
Have you tested the hubs
Have you tested the hubs properly as they only work with relative motion.
Basically the driveshaft has to move either forwards or reverse to engage the unit, if the clutch is in and the vehicle stopped, they will not engage.
If the vehicle is jacked with all four wheels off the floor, they will not engage.
They rely on the resistance of the wheel and the rotation of the drive shaft to work.
The best way to test is to put the vehicle on very slippery ground, mud, wet grass, or similar will do. Attach a vehicle to the rear with a tow rope to give resistance, then drive off to make the wheels spin. You will need an observer at each side to see if the front wheels drive, not forgetting the action of the differential. If the system is working at least one front wheel will spin.
leave it in 2wd with all the
leave it in 2wd with all the wheels on the floor then get under the front and spin eash front shaft at a time, they should turn a bit then lock up if the auto hubs are working right
