Forum:
Hello everybody. New guy here. Wondering if anybody can give me some pointers, please? I have a '98 Fourtrak TLD-SE. Some time ago a squeaking started that appears to come from front nearside wheel area. I had the bearings checked - OK. I was told it might be a sticky brake but I'd have thought the squeaking wouold stop when I used the brakes - it doesn't! It doesn't start until after I've been driving for 15-20 minutes so I'm guessing it is some kind of friction "thing" - something heating up and expanding, perhaps?. If I take it out of gear and freewheel the squeaking is still there. In gear, if I take my foot off the accelerator the squeaking reduces. Just about the only way to stop the wretched noise is to drive in 4WD! Can anyone help, please?
Hmmm thats an interesting one
Hmmm thats an interesting one u got there...squeak goes away when in 4wd...do you have free wheeling hubs fitted m8

If so try engaging the hubs but drive the vehicle in 2wd..this is straight forward if hubs are manual..not sure about auto hubs...
Does squeek disappear when you brake
Its frustrating trying to identify where these squeaks and noises come from at times..if noise disappears in 4wd it suggests something amiss with front drive train..could be a multitude of things.
Ohmigawd!
Hi Mike. Thanks for having a think about this. I've got auto free-wheeling hubs on my beast. As far as the brakes are concerned I was told that one of the pads has lost a retaining clip at the bottom so it tends to connect with the disk at a slight angle which I can put right by replacing both the front pads and disks. I was also told that the brake was sticking slightly and that was what was causing the squeaking. Maybe I don't fully understand but I would have thought that if that was the case then the squeaking would stop when I apply the brakes - but it doesn't. Am I missing a trick here? You're right about it being frustrating - I'm starting to get the idea this could be a long and expensive job trying to pin this thing down!!!!

Check UJs
Ah ha! Now squeaking like b*gg**y and camels a**holes I can understand! This suggestion has promise! I'll give it a try. Probably at least the weekend before I can do it, though. I'll let you know if it works. Many thanks for the suggestion.

Grease the UJs
Hello again. Well it's taken a while. I put the wagon in for a major service (I don't have any facilities at all for most of the jobs) and asked for the UJs to be greased if poss. I was told that they used some kind of lube on the UJ and for a couple of days the squeaking went away so I think you were spot on with your suggestion - many thanks for that. However, the squeaking is back again! I guess they just used WD40 or something! Do you know if there are any grease points that can be used or do I have to get everything split apart to pack the grease in? Your help appreciated. Thanks.

There are grease nipples on the UJ's..get a grease gun a pack em up with grease...the garage you took it to must be crap if all they did was squirt a bit of WD40 on em. They should be greased up at regular intervals....at least once a year anyhow.
I have uploaded a scan of the manual page clearly showing the location of the grease points. You can find it in my image gallery...just click on my name and then click 'mike's images'
Greasing the UJs
Mike - you're a star! Got me a grease gun so will give it a go. Thanks very much for taking the time and trouble to show me the manual page. Much appreciated. Thanks again. Rich

It's a long shot, but I had an unscheduled brake strip last W/E when It picked up a small stone between pad and disc. Same noise if brakes applied or not. HTH.

Thanks for that, Dave. I can check again but when I had the wheel bearings checked the brakes were checked as well. Still, I'll keep that in mind for the future!

Squeak
Hi have you tried giving the disc's a light sanding as sometimes they glaze over with heavy breaking worth a try
Squeak
Thanks for the tip although I rarely brake hard and the squeak is there braking or no braking. Might be worth a try though.
Cheers
