Need new gearbox options

Forum:

Hi y'all my 97 TDX is getting very whiny in all gears (lay shaft bearings?) so looking for a replacement, I've read previous posts which say that I don't need to worry whether it's a solenoid or 2h-4h-4l but I was wondering what other options I have, could I use a non-indie gearbox as long as it's a 2.8 td? Can I even use a 2.8 N/A or 2.5 N/A? Sorry if all this info is elsewhere I've looked & not found.

If anybody has the opinion that reconditioning the 'box I have would be a better option I'd be interested to hear it. Likewise if you live near mid-Wales & have a suitable gearbox please get in touch.

Thanking you, Bran

if you look in a manual youll

if you look in a manual youll find the gearing, all the diesals fit from any model, the older na engine had lower gearing, all the transfers are the same, some with button, some without, use the without!!

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Any 2.8 box will fit straight

Any 2.8 box will fit straight on. a Petrol F80/85 box will fit if you swap the bell housing and input shaft over. A 2.5 box will bolt straight to engine, but transfure will not bolt straight to prop shafts, flanges are difrent. Also as mentioned below, the output gearing is diffrent on diffrent box combinations.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
