Forum:
i have had a popping noise on decelerating ever since buying the vehicle, in attempt to cure it i have fitted brandnew complete distributor, complete exhaust and manifold gasket, also the combined heat sheild and gasket that goes between the two manifolds.
There are no induction leaks, the webber carb has manual choke, so could not be cause.
It has been suggested to me that it could be the wormgear drive on the distributor.Does anyone know about this
In every other way the engine is good, uses little oil & has 200psi on all 4 cyls.I would love to fix this rather than change engines.I am skilled volkswagon mechanic so dont mind getting stuck in to an engine. Any help would be great.
duke.
Cracked exhaust
Cracked exhaust manifold.
Timing, dizzy gear maybe, more likely bob weights throwing timing out.
Cam belt if fitted to these out a tooth or mistimed.
Tappets or valve issues, incorrectly adjusted or hydraulic lifters U/S.
If the carb is an aftermarket item it may need is chokes changing for the correct items, its possibly overfuelling in decalleration. Common problem with aftermarket carbs.
Alternatively turn the radio up.
Check the dynamic timing of the engine with marks and a timing light, this will give any advance or retard while running.
