Forum:
I am haveing trouble getting my f20 to start,it has been in storeage and
i was hopeing to get it running pending its restoreration it a 1978 model.
There is a good spark, the points are set and has had new distrbuter, plugs, and leads.
on turning over Engine it sounds like it wants to start, sounds like it is fireing, there is fuel in the carb when you look at glass in side of carb and i have sriped and cleaned out carb.it was the same before i
replaced any parts or did the carb.
when i got it last year it had been sitting on a farm for some time and
did start but would not take any throtle, splutered and coughed and ran badly, now wont run.
can anyone help?
Distributor
Has the distributor been set correctly?
Sounds like it could be firing on the exhaust stroke rather than the compression. Adjust number one plug to compression [remove plug. finger over the hole - use spanner to turn engine via the fly wheel - feel for compression stroke] and check inside the distributor cap to see which HT lead is being sparked.
If it was running before it
If it was running before it was stored, then most likely culprit is the fuel pump. These dry out and the valves stick, remove the top and free the valves, replace the top abd fill the line with fuel. Keeping the line filled with fuel stops the valves sticking.
The other option is the inlet valves crack if they are run on unleaded fuel, had exactly the same with mine. This is a head off job, (easy) to replace the valve. Do a compression check on the cylinders to confirm. Valves are available as it is the Toyota 12R engine, and cost about £8 each, use the Toyota engine code as often the valves are listed for Toyota, but not Daihatsu.
