Weird tail light fault

Forum:

Hi, own a J reg 4trak and recently 'lost' the tail lights on the upper two lights. Bumper tail lights are fine. All lights everywhere else are fine, all bulbs are fine inc those in the dead lights (swapped them with the good lights and they work). Brake lights fine in both sets. Have checked all fuses anyway, though with everything else working I can't see how that would be the fault. Similarly, with everything else inc brakes working on the 'faulty' pair of lights I would say the earth must also be sound. Had the lights off and checked wiring visually, it's like mad spaghetti in there but all looks fine, though some scotchblocks in evidence. I have replaced the tow socket since I had nothing getting to the trailer and now this is fine, though no tail lights on that since they are fed from the upper cluster (no probs, got rid of trailer now!!). Ideas anyone?

Have a look up and behind the rear passenger wheel for wire connections, also look for broken wires on top of the chassis rails.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

weird fault

There is a lot of wiring in there and it seems fine on the whole, should there be two large black blocks (c2" square) in there? There are various wire ends but they look long disused - would a multimeter be sensitive enough to pick anything up on anything so small, just to check? On the drivers side behing the upper light pack there is another rectangular box with a seriously corroded pcb in it. It is beginning to look like I might have to turn this over to someone as visual checks look OK, but I would like some help checking those loose wires if anyone has any suggestions - just want to eliminate as much as I can

you really could do with a multimeter reader/tester, sometimes the wire corodes right on the light pack plug, so although it looks all connected theres no continuous power.

To check for 12v you can

To check for 12v you can always use a bulb and some wier. Conect one wire to body (or negative of battery) and to the bulb. Then take another wire from the bulbs other terminal to where you want to test for power. If there is 12v, the bulb will light.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

The most likely scenario is

The most likely scenario is an intermittent earth fault if all lights arenot working.

Make a test lead long enouth to run from the battery negative terminal and connect it to the earth point on the lights. If they now work you have the problem.

What normally happens is the earth wires corrode internally, due to age, and the cores break. When they touch the work, when they seperate they do not, and this usually shows when lights work off road, but not on road. This is due to the excessive movement of the vehicle, and it moving the wiring until it touches.

I would recommend earth bonding the entire vehicle anyway, this is as simple as making an earth wire from each component to a good body earth. Then earth the body at least in two places to the chassis. It alleviates many problems.
