My 1998 Fourtrak owned from new with just 29K miles is making a strange sound heard from within the cab. I can only relate it to a 'scavenging' like sound, like a slow pumping sound. As the engine speed rises above tickover the sound gets lost under the general engine din.
Any help will be really appreciated.

Strange engine noise
With the clutch depressed there is no change of the noise. It sounds like a pump noise - could it be the power steering pump or a fuel pump

Further testing indicates
Further testing indicates noise comes and goes ie there some days and not others. Turning the wheel makes no difference when the noise is there. Very odd.
