Forum:
I started the car today and once started it ran for about 15/20 seconds with no smoke at all but then it started to smoke just a little nothing to shout about anyway I drove off and as I drove off I could then see plumes of white smoke behind me for about 100 yards and then it stopped I drove a further half mile and slowed down at a roundabout and then when I pulled off it felt as though it wasn't firing on all cylinders? but this only lasted about 5 seconds and then it was fine for the rest of the day.
I know the mileage of 62000 is correct, I also have some service history but not much, the car drives extremely well and if I'm not careful the speed just creeps up on me and before I know it I'm doing 70 in a 50 zone. Its a 1998 1.0 auto, I'm not losing any water or oil anywhere and there isn't any creamy stuff to be seen, the temp stays at normal so I am at a loss, the smoke is coming from the exhaust and it smells like a mixture of oil and petrol also I've noticed that the water in the radiator is purple? So over to you guys who know your stuff.

well , if it's intermitant, and white smoke. I would think there is some of that oily stuff you cleaned out your airbox stil in the inlet pipework
Only need a tiny amount to produce quite a puff of white.
Also, it's typical for it to pull in more oily stuff when slowing down , as the engine is drawing max vacuum when off the throtle, so once you set off again it's more likely to puff/misfire for a moment until it clears.
Dont worry about coolant colour relating to head gasket failure at the moment, there are quite a few differnet colours of antifreeze brand and it can look a different colour if it's a bit old and just looking in the radiator is hard to judge exact colour.
Thank you for the reply
Thank you for the reply Pocketroket, the stuff I sprayed into the air box was engine cleaner but it was only a quick squirt and I left it for a short time and then wiped out what I could as I couldn't quite get all my hand in or find a way to remove the box completely to clean it. Is there any way I can remedy this just to eliminate it?

A quick test is to remove the
A quick test is to remove the hose where it joins the throttle body and go for a drive.
This way you are driving with no air filter/airbox or hose that could have oil stuff inside.
It will drive louder without air filter, but it may help diagnose if it is oily stuff in the inlet pipework.
Or just keep driving it and it should work it's way out soon.
Thank you again I'll try
Thank you again I'll try removing it and go for a drive and then I will have to wait till the next day as it only happens on first start of the day.
