Forum:
hi there guys,
im about to lift my fourtrak to remove gearbox etc and renew a list of parts.... i have looked for a hoist chain with a block tackle and was going to hoist the front end up and the support it another way... is this a good idea? or is there a better way? i would eventually when the weathers better like to waxoil the underside of the fourtrak so this would be a good bit of kit for easy lifting..... the salt on the roads up here is layed like stupidly thick in the winter and will trash the undercarrage otherwise...
any thoughts on lifting tackle?? (under £200!!!);-)
Personally i prefer to remove
Personally i prefer to remove the transmission assembly with the vehicle on axle stands, and use a large trolley jack.
This saves having to disconnect everything to remove the entire engine/transmission as a unit, but you need good axle stands.
seeings as the one I did on
seeings as the one I did on saturday is still on a made up ramp I could post piccy, get yourself like asassin said a good trolley jack that can lift high but the only problem with a trolley jack is .....how do you support a gearbox on it?....you need a big plate or something to take the shape, I tell ya what I did.....this particular ftrak had a sunroof...so I popped out the roof, put plenty of old curtains round the frame then chucked a bar across, this enables you too connect a winch to it so you can lift the gbox up to the tranny tunnel, then using a jack slide the gearbox into position, although doing gearboxes in theory is easy in practise it can make your body ache like anything, fortunately the trak is an easy gbox to fit, the top bolts are a pain if you dont have a very long extension bar, I do the two boxes seperately as together there extremely heavy if it was to land on you while underneath, VERY IMPORTANT support the engine before touching the gearbox mount supports or youll rip the engine mounts, this is done by lifting the bonnet, placing a bar across the width of the vehicle then using straps or the like support the engine weight. Hope this helps, anything else just ask.
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Engine hoist. Can be used
Engine hoist. Can be used for many other things than engines. Can be used to lift front of car up to put blocks, axle stands underneith. Also if you remove the gear stick gatter you'll fing the gearbox lifting eye just bellow it. For some reason it doesn't quite line up, but once the gearbox is free of the rest of the car on a trolly jack, or whatever you use, you can put the arm of the engine hoist into the cab of the car (think you have to remove the door for acsess) and lower the box safely to the ground.
Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
super
