Hello, New here as I'm hoping to buy my first Diahatsu tomorrow. Its a used 2002 1.3 YRV. I've been reading up on various car guides and there's a couple of points which keep on coming up and worrying me. One is that the car isn't good at cornering and hence problems with wheelspin and the other that its uncomfortable to ride in. My kids really want this car, can anyone who owns a similar one tell me more?
I have a YRV turbo which i
I have a YRV turbo which i believe is a even firmer ride.
I would say drive it first before buying.
Yes the ride is not quite up to the quailty of other supermins, but i find it acceptable.
They are lightweight, so a decent sidewind (like it was today) tends to catch it a bit as well
But for the money most used ones go for, they are great value cars.

Not a bad car...
Depending how much you're buying it for? Mileage,etc..
I have the 1.3 premium, had it about a year and done about 9000 miles.
The handling is probably not the best...being a bit high, although not that high but I would say acceptable..in a straight line much better.
Reliability is very good...when I got mine,it had nearly done 80000 miles.
I've replaced the front pads, one front wheel bearing, radiator and one rear wheel bearing.
OK on petrol although most of my miles in and around town...
Make sure you have the remote for the central locking(if it has it)..
Also, make sure the driver's window control switch unit is in FULL working order, especially the front driver's window switch.
For a car around town,it's very practical...I've had three passengers in the back with no problems...
As for the wheelspin problem??? What do you mean?
Coming out of a junction,if you step on it it WILL wheelspin quite easily considering it's only a 1.3
The only problem with my YRV is that when you're on the motorway doing 75+,the steering wheel shakes like CRAZY...changed the front two tyres and balanced, yet problem still persists..don't know about that one because I've got another car that'll easily munch up the motorway..hehe
Like pocketrocket says,great value car.
Personally,I wouldn't pay more than £2000 for one,except for a TURBO.
Hope that helps...
Good luck!
My first Diahatsu
Thank you both for taking the time to reply, however, no worries, I have bought the car in question today! And I absolutely love it! Its a 2002 YRV Premium, got it for £995, with 12 months MOT and 3 months tax and its having back brakes replaced before I bring it home. Just a couple of small rust patches on the wheel arches, but that's all. I can't wait to bring it home, and show the kids, and get out and about in it. I am now a Diahatsu fan! Had a monster of a 3.2 V6 frontera 4x4 estate up until now so will take some getting used to sizewise!

Good stuff, Rust can be a issue with Daihatsu's once they get 8-10+ years.
Main thing is keeping the wheel arches clean from mud buildup, and giving them a good rinse after winter salty roads.
I love mine, My only grumbles interior wise were easily fixed, the standard speakers and radio/cd sounded very tinny. I do like good quality sound on the move to drown out a few interior rattles!
So i bought a £39.99 new stereo from Lidl!, and fitted a small bass box to the boot.
You will notice that it only costs about £45 to fill the small fuel tank!
Yet it lasts for ages!
I've yet to put petrol in it,
I've yet to put petrol in it, but really pleased to hear that! Was having to put £110's of petrol in the Frontera, so that will be a huge saving. Not sure about the stereo, someone has put a better one in, but as I love my music too, I may well do similar to you.

Bit late as you've bought the car, but look at the final post in thread

There is plenty of other stuff on YRV suspension on this website if you hunt around.
The YRV is a great car with some fundamental design compromises which many won't like, particularly in the suspension. It's impossible to design suspension for a light car that will handle all situations.
Two adults in the back will cause bottoming of the suspension, although I have to say it took about two years for the springs to settle to that level.
