my fourtrak is over heating

Forum:

my 1990 dhiatsu fourtrak is over heating we think it has something to do with the radiator dose anyone know what could be wrong Help

if you use it offroad at all,

if you use it offroad at all, it will be the lower half of the radiator is full of mud and not allowing air through, if its the original radiator, it could be all the fins have rotted away.
Had similar issue with mine earlier this year, replaced radiator, flushed full system and fitted new thermostat, works wonders now!!

rad probs

I agree with s2quattro....

Its chock full of mud on the outside or
the gills ( the wavy fins) have all rotted away or
the little pipes inside are all clogged up.

I renewed mine, well had it recored actually, now no problems at all.

My son had similar problems

My son had similar problems with two Fourtraks he owned some years ago. In both cases, a trip to a radiator specialist to have a new core fitted cured the trouble, at less cost than a new radiator.

why

Why do you think its the radiator? When does it overheat? Have you looked to make sure the thermostat isnt broke? The water pump working? Is the viscous fan spinning faster when hot? Several parts to a cooling system not just the radiator, a subject that has been done to death on fourtraks because in summer they can get very hot and winter hardly warm-usage depending.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Remember these vehicles have

Remember these vehicles have a lot of spare cooling capacity so overheating is something which should not happen unless theres a fault.

Begin with the thermostat, this is the most troublesome item on a Fourtrak, often they stick or just fail.

Flush the cooling system, set the heater to the hot position and remove the radiator bottom hose and drain the system, avoid the drain tap as any muck can clog the tiny drain hole. If the coolant is brown and dirty, or simply not the colour of your anti-freeze then flush the system out. Remove as many hoses as you can at one end and flush through with a hosepipe until it runs clear, repeat with all the hoses, and remove at least one to the heater matrix inside the vehicle as these trap lots of dirt.
Fill the system with water and replace the pipes as water exits them, run until hot and drain again, this should flush the system, refill and ensure you use a 50/50 mix of water and anti-freeze as its primary function is to prevent internal corrosion of the cooling system

Backflush the radiator: to do this you simply fire a hose through the radiator from inside the engine compartment and it will flush any dirt forwards, then examine the fins and pipes.
