04 Sirion - How to check engine error codes?

Forum:

i've just completed a swap of a full sirion driveline and electircal system into my 01 Cuore. I have a check engine light and was wondering how i go about finding out what error it has.

ideally without a scan tool, flashes will do me fine

any tips?

More than likely scan tool

More than likely scan tool only, cheap enough on ebay.

Counting the flashes of check light is for the older generation of cars

Can do with a paperclip or wire but BE CAREFUL!

BE CAREFUL! WRONG CONNECTION CAN BLOW FUSES OR EVEN WORSE!
IF NOT CONFIDENT BETTER BUY A PROPER READER!
The following works for my '03 automatic 1.3 model.
Well, it is not difficult at all but you can mess up pretty easily.
Note that the DTCs (diagnosis error codes) have different numbering scheme on the CEL vs the displayed codes on a reader's screen. Post here your findings.

1. Ignition OFF
2. Properly connect with jumper wire/paperclip the + holes of the OBD II connector as shown here (connect ONLY the holes marked + , hope the txt graph is readable):

.....--------------------....
.. / o o o o + o o o \.. <--- OBD II connector (ignore the txt graph . dots)
../. o o o o + o o o .\..
..--------------------------..

3. Ignition ON - Do not start engine
4. Look at the CEL as it blinks:
First bunch of flashes are decades of first error code, 1.5 second pause, second bunch is units,
then 2.5 seconds pause
then next error code (if more than one errors),
after last error, 4 seconds pause and then the sequence starts over again.
5. Ignition OFF, remove jumper wire/paperclip

Example:
If the Idle Valve is bad (had this problem myself), after jumper set up, ignition ON you get
seven brief flashes (7)
pause 1.5 secs
one brief flash (1)
pause 4 secs
repeats until ignition OFF
So , DTC # is 71 (while I would get the P505 error on a proper reader)

Error codes

Apart from an OBD code reader I have a special service tool to read the flashes when shorting the terminals....basicaly 2 wires with an led/bulb indicator. Part number 09991-87403-000.

Like Mi_ka says you can do various checks by shorting different pins.

Selecting the socket pins left to right 1 to 8 top row and 9 to 16 bottom row -

Diagnostic code for Engine control system. short 5(EFI)to either 12/13(Earth)

Code for ABS system, Airbag and Automatic Transmission, 4(ECU) to 12/13(Earth)

Code for Immobilizer system 9(ITC)to 12/13(Earth)

Still easier to use an OBD reader with built in code explanation Wink
