Transponder Keys - Fitted to All Models?

Forum:

Folks,

I've been told by an experienced locksmith that my key contains a chip - he has some kind of analyser that detects and interrogates it.

However, I wasn't aware that my Fourtrak had any electronic security device. It has been fitted with an after-market physical gear stick clamp lock

I've only just bought the car, and it came with one working key, and one broken one with a thinner body (suggesting no chip).

I've ordered two non-chip replacements, and the true test will be if these allow the car to start and run.

Meanwhile, can anyone confirm that all Fourtraks had an immobiliser, or only certain higher-spec. models? Mine is a 1998 TDL-SE.

Just to bottom this one out,

Just to bottom this one out, yes, they have an active chip. The replacement non-chipped keys allowed the starter to turn but not a successful start.

My local key chappie does them for GBP40.

immobiliser

If you wanted you could gaffer tape the chipped key to the steering column near the key lock so that it works and then you could use any number of unchipped keys. It all depends on whether you need the security of the immobiliser
