fuel gauge stopped working

Forum:

hi i recently bought a daihatsu sportrak Preg. when i got home it had a petrol leak from the rear coming from the tank.
i lowered the tank without loosening any pipes.found the leak and repaired it after removing all the fuel via the drain plug. when i put it back together and refilled with fuel the gauge dosnt work (it was defenitly working before i touched it )
i connected the two cables on the harness side and the gauge didnt alter.
i checked the sender cables were connected and there dosnt appear to be any cct. between cables from sender unit.
the temp gauge still works so as they both get their supply from same place i presume supply is ok.
any advice on this will be apreiciated as its now looking like i may have to fit a seperate gauge as i have tried eveything else i can think of.
cheers fred

I had a problem with my

I had a problem with my fourtrak`s fuel gauge when I bought mine.

Connections to the sender unit looked like they were connected ok,

But the spade terminal on the sender unit was rotten, so it was`nt actualy getting a good connection,

My gauge was intermitent when I got it, soon as I touched the connections on the sender unit they just broke away,

Might be worth while double checking the connections.

Beemers do it sideways

petrol gauge not working

cheers for that pretty sure thats not the fault but will check tomorrow as i had to disconect the jack plug when i dropped the tank.

Gauges work by a live power

Gauges work by a live power feed to them and the earth is run to the fuel tank via the sender, this is basically a variable resistor. To work the tank needs a good electrical connection to the vehicle body.
Clean part of the tank back to clean metal and do the same with the chassis, hold a clean wire betwen the two to give a good earth path from the tank back to the chassis.
Get an assistant to turn the ignition on and see the the gauge rises, if so its an earth problem, if not its most likely the sender unit.

Electrical

Electrical problem or the float is stuck inside the tank.
I would guess its either a cable contact or a cable is broken/rusted away where it is joined to a spade connection. 'P' reg suggests the cable could be the problem.

fuel gauge not working

well tried making good earth to tank<>no different.
tried reconecting wires from harness to sender unit. <>no different
LOOKS VERY MUCH LIKE THE SENDER UNIT IS EITHER STUCK ON EMPTY OR ITS FAULTY SO THAT LEAVES ME 3 CHOICES 1/ REMOVE TANK AND REPLACE SENDER UNIT (not realy an option)
2/ TRY ANOTHER GAUGE (SUPOSE ANY GAUGE WILL SUFICE )
3/ CARRY A SPARE GALLON OF FUEL IN THE BOOT.
if anyone can come up with ANYTHING ELSE i will try it.
thanks to all who have answered so far! cheers fred

fuel gauge

tried seperate fuel gauge connected to seperate suplly diverted through sender unit on my sportrak and it was reading empty when conected and full when conected direct to supply SO LOOKS LIKE MY SENDER UNIT IS U.S.
anyone know if its a simple job or a nightmare to fit one?
cheers fred

one or the other

If you are able to drop the fuel tank down without any rust or corrosion issues.....youll be very lucky, its a fairly easy job as its just bolts n pipe work, but unless your truck is immaculate underneath.....have fun shearing stuff, or you could cut a hole in the boot of your truck above the sender.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!
