I was wandering about the 'net reading articles about car stuff and one popped up about re-setting the ecu. It got me wondering. So I did the following. Usually I follow the code "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" but I just couldn't help myself.
I disconnected both battery terminals and touched them together. Other ways to discharge the "system" vary but I chose the above. I reconnected the battery and went for a drive. And do you know what - the car felt different to drive.
Things that stand out are:
1. The change to engine idle speed is smoother - it has been a persistent problem with "lurching" under certain conditions.
2. The average fuel consumption shot up from 42.5 to 46 - I am not exagerating this. I am still analysing this aspect.
3. The car feels livelier - it was quite brisk before but now feels better.
It's the damndest thing really. Who would have thought.
The downside is the radio lost its memory but setting the channels again is no problem, and the radio did not require a security code reset because the Sirion does not have that feature.
Any thoughts?

Yeah the ECU reset trick. All this does is remove anything the ECU has learned about the engine and sensors. Technically if anything has been changed etc.. Then it would be a good thing to do. Technically the ECU should self learn anything new without a reset. The only danger here is that if something was wrong in the past and still is the ECU would have had this stored somewhere and therefore for safety would be doing something to protect your engine from it.
See how you get on, if things start to change, then it's changing them for the better. As an example if you are now using a 99 RON fuel instead of a 95 RON fuel, then a ECU rest is a good thing

I mentioned in my initial post on re-setting my ecu about an improvement in fuel consumption, and I was going to give that some thought because it seemed too good to be true.
I have now done 500 hundred miles since the "re-set" and I can confirm there has been an improvement in mpg.
I drive the same stretch of road regularly and I am doing nothing different and the mpg has improved. It is hard to believe really, but there it is.
I also mentioned the engine transitioning to it's idle postion had smoothed out and the lurch had gone away, and this is still the case and the car is much more pleasant around town.
I appreciate I may be going over old ground on this subject as I understand it is an old trick but I just wanted to spread the word again.

Who else has given this a go? My EML light came on a while ago, and after some tentative driving to be on the safe side, I think that whatever the ECU detected was never there or has gone away, as the car drives just the same as it ever did.
I'm just in the process of disconnecting the battery to reset the light, but figure this exercise might be useful given my Rally IV's new life in New Zealand. Especially so given that I serviced her yesterday...
