Noisy Gearbox Whine on my Sportrak

Forum:

Hi,

I have recently purchased a Sportrak (1998 XiSE). The gearbox has always been noisy but after a 200 mile trip its got noticably worse. It has a gearbox Whine (and "de" "de" "de" when de-scelerating). The gearbox is porticularly whiney in 1st, 2nd, 3rd not great, 4th is quiet and 5th a quieter whine). The Whine disappears when I press in the clutch. Am I looking at a thrust bearing problem, a clutch problem or god forbid a gearbox problem. I am going to check the gearbox levels tomorrow but any additional guidance would be appreciated.

Cheers

Oils

I have the whine and a pulsing noise when engine braking too (among others!). After reading quite a bit on here, I put EP90 in all the gears (diffs, transfer and gearbox). The noises from the gearbox got a lot worse and the change was very nothchy.
I 'thinned' the EP90 in the gearbox down with a litre of EP80 and it is back to its normal level of noise now and the changes are smoother.

Moral of the story: If you can, might be worth playing with some different oils as they do have an effect. But, at the end of the day we have pretty worn gearboxes by the sound of it, just turn up the radio...

Noisy Gearbox

Noisy it is! I am just wondering how noisy it can get before it explodes....will I blow the radio speakers first ! I am going to mess around with the oil and see what happens ! Weird thing is - my gear change is really slick....cheers.
