Terios 2000 J100 - Hazard/Indicators Malfunction

Forum:

Hi all,
I took my Terios to an auto electrician because the indicators decided they'd work when they felt like it. Thought it must be union trouble!
The hazard warning worked always. He told me it was a (common problem) faulty hazard warning switch that was interconnected with the indicators and used the same flasher relay. He played with the hazard switch, pushing it in, then back and forth and the indicators started working again. For a few weeks anyway. It's gone again and I've done what he did and tried to blow the switch clean with compressed air. Now the indicators work but can't be relied upon as they have a mind of their own.
The guy said he could fix but I'd fall over at the price a new indicator stalk assembly would cost...$600:00 Australian...I did fall over.
Anyone know a fix that doesn't send me to the bank for a second mortgage?
I'd really appreciate any help. Why the heck put the silly switch on top off the steering column so the dust can get into it? CRAZY. Is it possible to get the switch out and clean it or jump the thing. I couldn't give a stuff if I haven't got a hazard flasher. Never had to use one in my life of driving.
Thanks

Remove the switch and clean

Remove the switch and clean it liberally with electrical cleaner, most of the time its the contacts which arc and build up a layer of burnt copper which will not conduct electricity. Electrical cleaner will remove this.

Alternatively you could dismantle the switch if it is a push fit assemble, or get a good secondhand switch.
