Forum:
hi,
i have just bought myself a sportrak to do a bit of off roading, it cost me peanuts and i bought it knowing it had a few small issues,
now
when driving along below 30mph the car is fine drives almost faultless, but you get to 35mph and the steering wheel wobbles, and you get a wobble/vibration throught the whole car, and the gear sticks are disco dancing with the vibration/wobble, but when you go faster the vibration/wobble gets a lot less and almost but not quite non existent,
now the steering wheel sits off centre to the right, i can only assume dodgy tracking or something, and when you turn left, or straighten the steering up to the centre and the vibrations/wobble get really bad, but then turn the steering back to its offset to the right position and the vibrations go almost again,
there is also a slight dead spot in the stering when turning left,
i have had a very quick look and due to recent weather not been able to look very well, i can rule out the propshaft uj's as there is no movement in these at all,
does anyone have any ideas where to look?
the truck has done 150,000 miles but does seem to be well looked after as i have pretty much all the history for the car, its only in the last 3 years its not been serviced or anything, but has only covered 6000 miles in that 3 years,
thanks in advance
ricky
massive vibration
Make sure that the free wheeling hubs are disconnecting properly. If you disengage 4x4 and drive off there can be most awful knocking whilst the front drive train is dragged along, check that the front drive shafts can be rotated backwards( in 2wd of course).... If you rotate them forwards it should lock the hubs.
To release the f/w hubs you are meant to reverse back 3 or 5 metres in 2wd before driving off, after using 4x4. The fw hubs can stick in the engaged position especially after periods of non use, I scared myself first couple of times it happened on me.
Thanks, At least I have some
Thanks,
At least I have some options to start, this flipping weather is doing my nut in,
I'm hoping it's something nice and simple and quick fix,
Also to add my sportrak has auto hubs on it, can these get stuck on?
right ok, so i have checked
right ok,
so i have checked everything in the above list, and its still got vibrations, now ive pumped the tyres up its not quite so bad, and i will be getting some new tyres hopefully this weekend,
now then, there is still quite a wobble through the transmission, that is worse at just over 30, but is there pretty much all the time,
also to go with it, there is a clunk every time you change gear or let off the throttle, it sounds like a transmission type clunk, and does sound like its coming from the front, but i cant see why as its in 2wd, i have also checked the prop uj's and they do seem fine, and the clunk isnt there until its warmed up a bit,
other than these couple of minor issues everything else is spot on
Take you pick ..........
The wobble is not from the hubs!
1. Track rod ends
2. Loose wheel bearing
3. Steering rack is loose.
4. Wheel balance.
5 Ball joints has failed.
6. Shock absorber failed
7. Wheel alignment incorrect adjustment
Want more ?????
right ok, so i have checked

Engine mount
If you have checked my list and used some force to move/check each then take a look at the engine mounts. Again use some force to lever the rubber mounts since the engine will be sitting on the mounts and if one is broken it only show if the engine is 'lifted'.
