Hi
Finally went out and bought myself a fourtrak TDX. (just turning 40, so mid life crisis here we come). Anyway, I was reading an article on this site about maintaining auto hubs, as the 4wd doesn't work.
So today, I did just that, stripped down the hubs to give them a good clean and re-grease. The near side hub is missing most of the internal moving parts. (Now I know why the 4wd isn't working). The off side hub is fine and everything appears to working. My question, why would a previous owner do that to the near side hub?
I have checked the prop and both axles, all appears to be turning when in 4h or 4l.
Also anyone out theresho lives in Norfolk want to help/provide some guidance to a newbee?
Cheers
im too far as im
im too far as im suffolk/essex/cambridgeshire border, regarding the auto hub- prob took it apart without knowing what doing. Personally I would fit manual locking hubs.
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Hi I will installing manual
Hi
I will installing manual hubs. However what I was wondering, could there be a problem with 4wd, and instead of sorting it out, they dismantled one of the hubs. What do you think?

Hi. I am slightly confused.
Hi. I am slightly confused. Both your threads have not answered my question. I do have basic knowledge of 4wd. (I learnt to drive in a series 2 landrover and passed my test in a 90, then completed a two week intensive off road training. I have also read the info on this site about the specific workings of 4wd system for daihatsu).
My question. Why would the previous owner remove at least 50% of the internal components in the near side auto hub? Could it be that there was an issue with 4wd, so by disengaging the hub, it would not be able to go into 4wd. I will be changing the auto to manual, but want to make that it's not some other major issue before I go ahead.
Please can I have some practical advice that is specific to my question, rather than the standard 4wd advice.
Cheers.

sorry but im no mind reader
sorry but im no mind reader and do not know why its removed, if you read my link it says what is connected to what so you can go along and elimanate any of the issues, if your mechanically minded its easy to work out, all you have to do is remove the hubs, jack up front, turn prop n see if the halfshafts spin.....not difficult

'Electronic' gearbox ?
If it's got a vacuum servo system to engage 4wd (4wd button on the dash), these are known to stick in 4wd when not used often, as is the norm.
It could be that the bod who flogged you the vehicle couldn't be arsed to fix the box, so stripped out a auto hub to stop axle wind up.
BTW, I'm near Norwich, but I don't know much of this prob because my trak has manual hubs and a manual 4wd selector gearbox.
