Automatic free wheeling hubs

Forum:

everytime i put the 4 wheel drive in on my fourtrak it never does anything, and i can't work out wether it is the automatic free wheeling hubs or the prop shaft.

non operational 4x4

Just to get us started ..... Does the front propshaft turn when 4x4 is selected and you move the vehicle? Do you have manual or automatic free wheeling hubs?

I have automatic free

I have automatic free wheeling hubs, i got it wrong in the description, and i have not tried to check if the propshaft turns but i will check and reply to you

free wheeling hubs

If you jack up the front of the vehicle, leave it in 2wd and reach underneath and turn the propshaft you should hear the 2 free wheeling hubs cut in and the two front wheels should start to rotate.
To release the hubs turn each wheel backwards and the 4x4 should drop out after a couple of turns, leaving the wheel spinning freely again.
If you now drop the 4x4 lever in to 4wheel drive you shouldn't be able to turn the front prop.
The most likely reason for no 4x4 is that one of the freewheeling hubs is sticking in the 2wd position. A careful strip, clean and lube usually fixes them.
