Forum:
hi,
I own a 1990's Fourtrak 2.8TDX, with a 5-gear-box. Here in Austria it is called "Rocky" and is quite rare on the streets.
Till now I repaired the starter and the motor runs nice (although loud) but I have problems to get the 2nd Gear in. sometimes it works fine, but then I have to struggle and release the clutch a bit in order to shift.
is this normal behavior or is my gearbox going to die?
thanx for replies and sorry for my english

Gearbox
Grossvater (I like the name),
If I may use my fluent Austrian I will see if I can help. If the gearbox is having the grossen clanken whirrin mit ze grinden noize it is about to smacken die. But when you have the cogszen wheels maken the uber louden boomen earen splitzen bangen it has died.
Hope this helps. I am also sorry for my Austrian.

Most likely the mainshaft nut
Most likely the mainshaft nut loose; look at the back of the transfer case just above the propshaft and you will see an aluminium cover shaped like a Madonna bra at an angle of 45 degrees. Remove the 6 bolts and you will have two shafts in bearings facing you, tighten the top one as tight as you can, and only use a 30mm ring spanner or 6 point socket, get a bar on it to give more power.
Captivate it securely, its got a groove into which the flange of the nut is punched, punch it in tightly. Some people advocate welding but it damages the hardened shaft.
