Fuel leakage

Forum:

Hi there, my 1990 Fourtrak is leaking from a rusty pipe out of the fuel tank - the one that comes from the filler cap. Can this bit be replaced separately or do I need to buy a complete new tank. If the latter, how much and where can I get it? thanks.

unfortunately as far as i can

unfortunately as far as i can find out this bit cant be replaced,

i'm also not entirely sure you can get the tanks any more, i've had a quick scout through my suppliers at work and cant find any aftermarket suppliers.

daihatsu could probably get you one but there buggers when it comes to prices, and there stock availability is shocking at best, which really only leaves you 2 options, replace for a good 2nd hand tank, or repair the tank you got, if you remove the tank and wash it thouraly (spelling sorry) it should be good for cuting and welding Smile

there is a 3rd option of bodging it, motor factors sell stuff called petro patch or quick steel or metal epoxy putty, that will seal the leak for a little while till it rots out more around it

sorry not much help,

The filler pipe has a rubber

The filler pipe has a rubber section in it at the tank end, and some have a rubber section at the filler end, you need to determine which type yours is.

If you have rubber at both ends its a case of removing the pipe and making a new one, preferably in stainless steel, being mounted in rubber means it won't be in contact with mild steel and electrolytic reaction won't occur.

If you have the type with the filler end incorporated tou have to unbolt this from the filler end and remove the rubber end from the tank, you can make a new one from mild steel (exhaust pipe of the right size or diameter is fine) and cut back the pipe to good metal. Clean both pipes back to good metal and weld or solder the new pipe to the existing stub and replace.
