Using Loads of OIL

Forum:

I Have a Sportrak L reg, 91k ELXi. Bought it from the auctions month ago. Passed the MOT but failed on back box, so I bought a new one. I have noticed I am using alot of oil.

>>>> 1st the oil light came on. I checked the dip stick, the measure was showing MIN. I put in 4LTRS. I noticed 2 weeks later the measure was showing MIN.

>>>> I then started monitoring the situation. I filled the oil upto MAX. I went on a day out to Hadrians wall ( 150miles away from mine ) all motorway miles. When I arrived the oil was on MIN again. There is no external leakage under the car ( I had it checked where I had it MOT'd ) I filled it up with OIL again. Travelled home 150miles ( all Motorway ) got home same again! The dipstick measure on MIN.

>>>> I am not over heating, Not using any water, there is NO black somke or heavy smoke from the exhaust. However I was followed from my jurney and was told that when I was traveling over 70mph you can see from the rear small puffs of blue oil burning smoke.

I was told that it could be the valve stem oil seals.
I was told to test this by getting upto 50mph in 3rd, leave it to go to 45mph and then floor it upto 50-55mph and see if the rear throws out loads of black/blue smoke. I tryed this and it did nothing.

Oil problem

Hi Andy,
There's not a lot you can do but investigate if your burning oil its either the valve stems or rings to check let it tick over for a couple of minuets then put your foot to the floor for a quick blip get a mate to stand behind the car if your burning oil it will blow it out in smoke (the oil collects in the pots)then I'm afraid its major surgery but if its just passed its MOT they should have picked that up on the emission check and 91K is not a lot so you might have a leak try laying clean cardboard under the truck overnight to detect any drips for indication.

Hi matey,I tried that. I

Hi matey,

I tried that. I give it a blip and all you see from the rear is small spots of oil. i'd say 3parts oil 1part water. and a really small thin puff of dark smoke. what do you think the roblem could be? and will it cost a bomb? cheers mate. andye edwards.
there is no leaks under the car at all, even had it checked on the ramps.

As stated above, it could be

As stated above, it could be valve stem seals/rings or a combination of both. BUT what oil exactly are you using? Those things the supermarkets sell are next to useless, and are designed basically to be burned off in shafted engines, and offer only very basic protection, so try switching up a grade and then monitoring again. A good Castrol/Mobil would do.

And if still no joy, then I personally would just get another lump from the breakers. To strip and rebore with all the associated costs of rings, not to mention rebuilding the head would not be viable.

I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers For all the help.

Head gasket

I think your cylinder head gasket is leaking. Possibly a break from an oilway into a piston and/or into the coolant. Take a look inside the radiator and the reservoir and look for oily deposits floating on the water / or can you smell exhaust gas in the reservoir? If either is evident its a faulty head gasket. The leak might be only into a piston evident by blue smoke from exhaust, so a piston compression test would give the proof.
