Charade 2003 - rust holes in boot

Forum:

I have noticed two rust holes in the boot of my 2003 Charade Shok They are beneath the spare wheel either side of a bracket. I am a little confused as to how they got there as the rest of the car is in excellent condition with very little rust.

The holes have not gone all the way through both layers of body just the top layer into a wee void which itself has what appear to be drainage holes (as viewed from beneath)? The underneath of the car body is still in excellent condition with no rust.

Does anyone else have this kind of corrosion in their boot-well? Does anyone have any tips as to how to avoid this recurring after fixing said rust?

Thanks.

Maybe somebody drilled holes

Maybe somebody drilled holes to either fix something there or help drain it at some point?? Like all rust you have to grind it back and seal with sealant and/or paint. You can get paint on rust cure stuff like Dinitrol etc.

The holes on the underside of the vehicle seem to be "original" (i.e. there from new) but I guess they have been exposing the top-side/layer of the boot-well to moisture from underneath... if you know what I mean. Kinda hard to describe.

Anyway, I will fix the rust holes and see how things go.

Rust treatment

My wheel well had obviously been regularly full of water, since the car leaked badly.

First step was to loose the drain plug.

Rust was treated by rubbing with aluminium foil dipped in sunflower oil. For the heavier areas, bit of old TV aerial with bit of rolled up beercan inside it, in a drill chuck.

Works well. Dunno if you could over-paint it after the oil sets, since I havn't tried, but in a wheel well cosmetics aren't going to bother most people anyway.

If you think its up-spray (seems a bit unlikely?) make "buttons" (maybe from bottle tops? Any bit of stiffish plastic sheet would probably do.) on the underside that don't obstruct drainage.Secure them with a cross piece on the inside(I use chopsticks) and a bit of twisted cord/wire, or a cable tie.

For the other drain holes in the car I leave the cord long and I think it works as a wick to collect any water off the floor of the car.

Charade

I got this also with my Charade 1997 had to take out all the carpet and find a hole on the left side under the seat (big hole) but the water wasn't coming from the hole under the seat, it was coming from the left side inside the boot, and I still can't find out where from, even taking everything out, if the car is park up and raining will not come in, but if you drive the car on the wet road, boot will fill with water. If anyone has a answer to this please let us know.
