It could be many things, the best way to begin is by lifting the vehicle and getting it on four axle stands, get an assistant to start the vehicle and engage gear with you under the vehicle.
Trace the noise to a specific area, check the bearings, brakes for binding, and the handbrake for being slightly overtensioned, and the clutch thrust bearing.

help my poor beloved fourtrack has died .
my daihatsu fourtrack f80 soft top built 1988 with 3y 2ltr petrol engine has been with me a very long time. we have been to hell and back together but now the gearbox and or the transfer box have had there day i cannot afford the £550 needed to recon but i love the truck and would be gratefull of anyone who either has a gearbox or a vehicle of the same type that would adapt to fit.i know that some toyotas that are not 4x4 have the same gearbox but would the transfer box be compatible?does anyone out there now?i am good mechanic and up to now i have managed to mend and indeed to make many parts myself and have basically restored the f80 and she is in perfect condition.so as you can imagine i want save myself from having to drive the awfull peugeot 406 my partner made me buy.

I got a pug 406, bloody awesome car :-D, if you split tge transfer box from the main gearbox see if the shaft on back of the main gearbox works via the gears, if its the transfer, nice easy job, theres still some around, look on ebay, there all the same fitting with just two types- either vacuum switched ( dont buy) or manual shift ( purchase), its no big issue, its just a gearbox.
