Voltage for glow plugs in a four trak

Forum:

I have a Daihatsu 2.8TD engine fitted in my Landrover but i don't know whether the Glowplugs run on 12 or 7 volts. Does anyone know the voltage theuy use in the 4trak Unknw

7 volts or 7.5 volts

7 volts or 7.5 volts depending upon which model your engine was from.

There are 12 volt plugs available but they were only fitted by people suffering from issues with the relay, they totally bypassed the relay and wired them directly to 12 volts through a dash switch.

To identify which is which you need to remove one and get the manufacturer and part number off it, don't assume as by fitting the wrong voltage you can damage the relay as the correct voltage is crucial to the feedback circuit for the timer, also if you fit the wrong ones it may put the glowplug light off earlier and be difficult to start and smoky.

I would like to change to 12 volt and would like to know a supplier or manufactures part number for replacement glow plug required. Any help would be apprectated. Thanks.

You need the thread size and

You need the thread size and the dimensions of the glow plug, you then need a sympathetic retailer who will let you trawl through their technical catalogue, then through their stock for 12 volt items.

Begin with the 12 volt plugs, then look for the correct thread size and tip length at that voltage, then you need the heat rating, as long as its not too wide to fit the aperture, not a problem on a Fourtrak engine, then they should fit. I would suggest fitting a Bosch manual relay, these come in 12 volt versions and were fitted to early model Peugeot, citroen, Renault madels as well as VW, Seat, Fiat, and many more models. These are basically timers and have no feedback circuit, simpler, no complex timer electronics, and if they fail they can be bridged out.

Cheers, thanks for post on this subject. I feel more confident that I am not doing a comp[lete learning curve when somebody out there who can help. Alsp being a VW man the info on relay will help.

Thanks.

Tony.

Mk 1 and early Mk 2 Golf

Mk 1 and early Mk 2 Golf diesels and Jetta models had the non electronic type fitted, as did other diesel engined VW variants of the time.

Usually 5 wire systems, two large, one in from the battery and one out to the glowplug rail; the three smaller are earth, glow plug light indicator feed, and one from the ignition to activate the ralay. Some were four wire, the earth was omitted on these and they were earthed through the metal mounting bracket where it bolted to the body.
