Forum:
When I moved to Wales last year my new Daihatsu service agent diagnosed a drive shaft fault. I gather it is a general problem with 2003 Charade's. I had only done 18418 miles then and only 21500 now. The service agent contacted Daihatsu Uk to see if they would pay because of low milage, but they said no.
I have noticed a noise when turning for years now and mentioned it to Daihatsu in Cheltenham in 2007 but they didn't pick up on drive shaft fault. When I phoned them yesterday they were unaware of the problem - they only became a franchise in 2005.
I have written to Daihatsu UK but got nowhere. I am intending to write to CEO in Japan to see if I can get anywhere with this.
Anyone got any other ideas I might try?
I bought the Charade for reliability and have really liked the car up to now.

Drive Shaft fault with my 2003 Charade
I noticed a problem with my 2003 car a few months back which has also been diagnosed as a drive shaft fault, I've done slightly better on the mileage (53,200), but the quote for the new part alone is £499.76 before VAT which pretty much rights the car off. The car has been such a pleasure otherwise I'd consider having a go fitting a 2nd hand one myself but how do I tell if it's any better than the one I'm taking off? Any advice?
I believe people have had
I believe people have had problems in the past with Daihatsu and paying for parts. There is a contact for the head of Daihatsu UK. Daihatsu dave has contacted them in the past and got some good results from it

Drive Shaft fault
The problem turned out to be a failed nearside inner CV joint. Two of the outer bearings had somehow managed to slip over the retaining rings which are supposed to hold the bearing and needle rollers underneath in place. The outer bearings were only held in place by the outer casing and all the needle roller bearings had escaped into the boot. The boot was still in perfect condition as were the outer CV joint and the driveshaft itself.

How do I tell if it's only the outer joint?
Thank's for the great link! The previous garage I'd taken it to for it's MOT thought it might be a CV joint on it's way out. Short of replacing the outer joint and giving it a run, is their any other way to check which part of the driveshaft is faulty? As I said before the problems not really notable below 40mph
You normally hear a rough or
You normally hear a rough or clicking sound with a fair amount of steering lock and applying power at same time.
A big open space such as empty car park is ideal place to try it out!
If there is some other fault
If there is some other fault with the driveshaft (not the outer joint), then I know a company who can recondition any complete shaft that you send them. I will have to dig out their details.
driveshaft
Its always the outer joint that wears first because its the one that does all the articulation. Having said that £19.00 is ever so cheap , I guess that's plus VAT.
Sirion with same problem.
Hi my sirion seems to have the same problem as your Charade had.
Can you tell me if changing the CV joint fixed the problem?
Thanks in advance
