I know it's a nut, but is it on splines and are they taperred?

They are a tapered spline and
They are a tapered spline and the nut only pulls the wiper arm onto the spline.
To remove you remove the nut ans lever the base of the arm up evenly and it will pop off, or you can buy a little puller for peanuts to pull them off.

Many thanks, wanted to make sure as i've blundered in on removing things in the past on other vehicles, only to find out the easy way after i've mangled/broken it off! Scrapyards are a good way of finding out (at others expense!) but not many round here and no Fourtraks in either.
