Forum:
( On 1992 Sportrak 1.6 elexi )Just got the head skimmed and put the cylinder head back on with new headgasket and other gaskets but orange engine light is on and the running isnt great. I am running coolant flush through the system at the moment and changing to long life stuff tomorrow.
From cold the sporty starts but hesistates as soon as you apply the accelerator and then cuts out. If allowed to idle for a bit its fine but when 'reving slightly above 1000rpm the revs "bounce" up and down untill i increase the revs past 2000rpm and it stops. This happens even when engine is hot.
The temperature also raises past vertical but i can hear air trapped inside of the cooling system.
any ideas?
If the CEL light has come on
If the CEL light has come on then there is a reason for this. Unfortunately I do not know this vehicle to say whether it has a ODB2 socket. If it has you're best bet is to diagnose why the CEL is on and to find the fault code using the ODB2 socket with a fault finding tool which will give you a code.
But not to sound too sarcastic, but I think the issue is around what you describe in your initial post perhaps?
Good luck. And hopefully someone will be along to maybe give better constructive feedback to the problem

No OBD on these. It sounds
No OBD on these.
It sounds like a sensor (such as map or throttle position sensor) has not been plugged back in or a grounding wire is off. Or the wiring loom damaged from doing the head gasket job., very easy to do as some of the wires are very thin.
checking wiring loom then?
ok so would you say its best to trace wiring loom back
i know the plug going onto the oil pressure switch( near crank pulley ) is very thin but this wouldnt cause it i didnt think.
Near the dizzy is a free black connector but i couldnt find anywhere for it to connect.
checked loom but
checked the loom as carefully as i could and nothing seems out of place - cleaned and cheacked the earths etc. the wire going to the oil pressure switch near crank pulley is almost snapped although not completely but i would not have thought this would be my problem?
Also changed the thermostat and coolant , temp still rises over half but not badly.
I am taking it to a mate who works on all types of vans including daihatsu on sqaturaday morning to see if he has an idea , he said his diagnostics tool might work?? but When you say it has no OBD i take it there is no other way of reading the fault code for why the engine lights on
Yes there will be a dianostic
Yes there will be a dianostic plug somewhere underbonnet, usually near the coil. On the charade for example you short the 2 brown wires on this plug, And then the check engine light flashes with ignition on, And you count the number of flashes to look the fault up in the manual.
Without the Sportrak/Applause workshop manual you won't be able to know whats going on
Coolant temperature sender,
Coolant temperature sender, when its defective it puts a fixed default value in and its not the constantly variable resistance that you get with the cooling and heating of the engine.
Check the wire is attached to the sender, also check the wire has not snapped next to the sensor as this is a common problem. If you have a multimeter you can check the sender by putting it into resistance, put the negative probe onto the battery negative terminal and the positive probe onto the sender connector tag. As the engine heats up it should alter its resistance.
Common problem on these engines.
coolant temp sensor
i ran the diagnostics and it identified the coolant temperature sensor as the only fault,
Is this the one for the ECU
if so is this the correct type:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Coolant-Temperature-Sensor-for-Daihatsu-Sportr...
