Sirion Rally 2

Forum:

Any ideas why my Rally 2 has started spluttering as soon as the temperature reached freezing? It feels like fuel starvation but you can clear it - for a while at least - by really revving it! Tried sitting on the motorway at 85-90mph (on the autobahn of course officer!) to see if it was lack of fuel, but it ran fine! It seems worse between 2-3000 rpm. Checked the air temp. sensor and diagnostics but there seemed to be no problems showing up. Had recently filled up with V-power and wondered if there was water contamination, but I'd done about 70 miles before it started. Waiting for better weather to see if it disappears, if not I guess it must be water in the fuel......unless you know different!!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I can't afford to tax the Mira Classic right now (bloody Christmas!).

Odd one that. Part-throttle misfires are usually a thing of carburettored cars and in this case I'd say it was carb icing. If you can thrash it and it goes well, maybe the modified mapping of the ECU on the Rally editions doesn't like the dense air. When did you last check your air cleaner? What type is fitted? Should be high efficiency, not standard paper

Remapped ECU

I understood from Trevor Levy the 'designer' of the Rally mods that he gave up trying to remap the ECU and concentrated on cams.

More likely, They did not

More likely, They did not have the ability or time to develop a modified motherboard. PLus the gains are minimal on advanced naturaslly aspirated engine.

Just a shame they did not have a stronger gearbox and the Sirion Rally with the K3-VET, the chassis is begging for that bit more power.

A few owners (including me)

A few owners (including me) has had misfiring problems. I know that one of the likely culprits is the igniter box which is a central transfer box from the coil packs to the ECU, and the connectors inside the box being at fault. Worth a look.

Rally 2 spluttering

Still misfiring even though weather has warmed up, so the ice doesn't seem to be the problem. Seems to happen more when I go uphill, so either it's something electrical breaking up when under load or it's just something as simple as water in the fuel which gets picked up when I'm on an incline - I had just filled up when it started and there's been a lot of rain, so maybe their fuel was contaminated! I'll mention your possible diagnosis to my mechanic brother to see if it rings any bells. Thanks everyone for advice, I'll update you after Xmas (can't afford to do anything right now! Sure you all know what I mean).
PS. Air filter is clean and dry!
