Forum:
please read its long winded but i have to say from the start lol
hi i buy and sell 4x4s and had quite a few fourtraks in my time,i no there a good reliable truck but i have recently come across one that is not lol..
recently bought a tdx on a 1996 mint condition and full service history only 119000 miles 2 owner car i thought yep this will be one to keep any way here goes 1st my 4x4 system did not work tried all sorts vac pipes etc.. could not get it working so took it to a friends garage who are 4x4 specialists they reckon.. he phones me up and says can not get 4wd to work but that is the least of your problems.
I said why is said i reckon your head gasket has gone its boiling over i thought this is weird as i ran it 2 weeks and not a problem on the way back from his garage after refilling n it got about 3 miles when temp gauge went to boiling point then went back to half with in seconds so i got it home and re topped water up again then this froth started poring out of rad with cap off if i put cap on it would come out in to expansion tank took it to a few garages and every one is saying head gasket i sill had doubts so i phoned my cousin who deals with l200 and he said rad cap or air lock so i borrowed my friends fourtrak rad cap and still same bled air lock best i could over and over again still this weird froth so i stuck hose pipe in rad and left it running cured no more spewing froth out i thought i had fixed it but nooooo.
so today i changed thermostat and bled system again..bubbles are going in to expansion tank but when i take rad cap off no bubbles come from there its weird ive bled and bled cooling system i think its fixed drive few miles temp gauge goes up then down again so after all that i am no better off i think deep down head or crack is a deff but i no loads a fourtrak owners and there telling me no way its head as there steel blocks and heads bla bla bla im confused.
so at the min ive wedged a bit of rubber under rad cap and now it plods on due to not pressuring as gasses are escaping out now.
what are your thoughts cheers
why dont you just get a sniff
why dont you just get a sniff test done?? and whats wrong with 4x4?? is it the solonoids on the transfer box??
Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

Yes, a sniff test will
Yes, a sniff test will identify it.
What's the radiator like? The Fourtrak seems to need all the help it can get in keeping cool, and missing fins can have a dramatic effect. As I found out...
If you are getting bubbles,
If you are getting bubbles, and weird froth. It's the head gasket, or if very unlucky a head crack.
K-seal is not crap and does
K-seal is not crap and does not block the system,
Unless you are using Radweld from the 1970's, Or wonderweld without draining the antifreeze, I have never seen any problems from using any of the popular products.
None of these products do any blockage damage.
They are good for small leaks from radiator/heater cores, core plugs, thermostat housing etc or a external head gasket leak (coolant dripping down block).
But wont do anything for a overly pressurised cooling system with failed gasket.
If you get air locks in these
If you get air locks in these something is amiss as they just fill and don't get air locks.
Have the cooling system pressure tested with the glow plugs removed, leave it under pressure for 1 hour and see if the pressure drops, if it does then get someone to crank the engine and see if droplets of water come out of any of the glow plug holes, if it dies the either head gasket, cracked block, cracked liner or warped head or block deck face.
Drop the coolant with the bottom hose removed and not through the drain plug, catch the contents in a clean bowl, filter this water through a pair of the wives, girlfriends old tights and see how much debris it traps, if excessive it can be a corroded cooling system. Remove the engine block cooling system drain bung, replace the radiator bottom hose and fill the cooling system with a watering can slowly, if nothing comes out of the drain bung them the cooling system is silted up. Poke out the drain plug hole with some wire and see if you can get water flowing, if so flush until clean.
This should point you in the right direction, from here check the radiator is getting hot as idiots use crap products such as K-seal which blocks them and they have no cooling effect as very little water passes through them, and check the viscous coupling on the fan is working.
Check the operation of the water pump, you have to remove this, and if you have a badly silted or corroded cooling system I would put money on it that the steel impellor (blades) of the water pump have corroded away and have little to no pumping affect.
Long reach.
You fitted the wrong type of thermostat. Long reach thermostat is the type for diahatsu.
Oh yes it does, thats why I
Oh yes it does, thats why I and many others have spent so much time putting right the affects of this product.
