How do you check that 4x4 drive is working?

I have a Daihatsu Sportrak 1994 with auto locking hubs.

Can anyone tell me the easiest and safest way to check that the 4x4 drive is engaging?

So I know I really have 4x4 drive.

Lift it.

Jack all 4 wheels from the floor supported safely on axle stands or get a gargae to lift it. Switch on and engage gear.

when should i use the 4x4

when should i use the 4x4 drive?and sometimes i hit the button and the car will drive in strange noise,sometimes i have to stop ,switch off the engine and drive again,but for some it seems stacked,do i have to do something diffrent?
