Forum:
Recently bought an 1989 Sportrak EL, seemed to be in quite good nick until last night when I lost all my gears, there is no smell of burnt clutch just a bit of a noise (like gears not quite engaging)for a few minutes and then nothing!!! Any ideas anyone???
gears
make sure its not in 4wdN!
other than that if the engines turning and the prop isnt its either box or clutch. Dont think there is an inspection plate but if there is (have a look underneath) remove it and shine a torch in, check for bits of clutch.

Sounds like you may have fall
Sounds like you may have fallen victim to the age old main shaft nut problem. Though normaly you get some warning of this problem comming on (ie some gears don't engage properly).
If this is the problem, don't worry too much it's not terminal usually.
What happens is the nut holding the main shaft in place works loose, and eventually strips the thread out of itself. All you need do is replace this nut.
This can be done from underneeth the car.
Access is gained by removing the transfure box from the rear of the gearbox.
Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.
H&L gears
Have you moved the H&L gear knob? If its been positioned between the gear selections there will be no response.
