My 93 Fourtrak 2.8 tds (pre Independent) refuses to fire up.The glow relay won't stay on, just ticks on and straight off every few seconds. I've tried wiring the relay switching circuit straight to the battery, this does make the relay stay on, but results in a very smokey, misfiring start up. I'd be chuffed if anyone can tell me what's up the creek before I have to pay someone to sort it Cheers!

The glow plug relay, (mounted on the right hand inner mudguard, covered by a black plastic cover) is supposed to click on and off, every couple of seconds, for about 15 seconds. Wait for the glow plug light on the dash to go out before trying to start the vehicle.
I would guess that it is one or more dodgy glow plugs themselves, not the relay. Go and buy one replacement glow plug, and change one at a time till it improves. Otherwise, you can get them tested at an auto electrician.

Thanks 4 the reply Bundy, don't think I explained the problem very well. The relay stays on for probably less than a second each time,(ticktick), ie.nowhere near enough time to let the plugs heat. The glow light works as normal. I reckon the plugs are fine, it started perfect til last tuesday. Any thoughts? I seriously doubt the breath freshening abilities of mud:)
Doc, thats still correct. The
Doc, thats still correct. The click, click of the relay lasts about 1 sec, then about a 2 to 3 sec delay, then click, click again, and so on for about 15-20 secs. Perchance you havent done anything else to your Daihatsu, like changed a fuel filter, for example. If it isnt bled properly, it will be a real bugger to start. If not, then I still tend toward a dud glowplug.
