fourtrak handbrake adjustment

Forum:

Hi,

The handbrake isn't holding as well as it should. Does this automatically adjust or can I do it manually Unknw and if so - where is the adjusting nut. Could just be worn brake shoes as they've been on a few years.

Many thanks

hand n brakes

brakes on the back of a fourtrak are pretty crap really, probably the shoes need replacing and drums need shaving of the lip, the udjuster for the handbrake is under the vehicle more or less directly below the handbrake area, simple nut n thread job.

Full of ideas but no time to do them!!

IN an ideal world, yes they

IN an ideal world, yes they are self adjusting. Each time the handbrake is pulled on, the ratchet mechanism inside the rear brakes will click another notch if there is sufficent slack.

The handbrake can be manually adjusted in 2 ways, either through the slot in the backing plate, or under the handbrake handle itself. BUT, I think you need to check something first. How free are your handbrake cables. They have a bad habit of seizing up, then no amount of adjustment will make them hold. Unfortunately, if they are siezed, theres not a lot you can do to fix them apart from replacemnet.
