Forum:
I have recently purchased my 1st 4trak.It has the 2H 4H N 4L drive selector and auto freewheel hubs.It gets stuck with one rear wheel spinning . Front prop turns so I gather from reading other probs its the hubs , half shafts or diff. How do these auto hubs work Could this be an electrical problem
My light in the speedo to indicate 4wheel drive comes on. Please help before it snows !
Not likely to be an electrica
Not likely to be an electrical problem. With the old type transfer case, such as yours, all 4wd selections are done mechanically. Remember, a common misconception is that a 4wd has all 4 wheels driving at once. That is true on dead flat, grippy surface, but as soon as you introduce mud, or uneven terrain, where one or two diagonally opposite wheels can lose traction, you will probably get stuck, as all the drive torque will go to the wheel offering the least resistance. Drive diagonally across a ditch, without momentum, as two wheels hang over the ditch, they will spin madly, and you will not go anywhere. The solution, cross axle diff locks. Unfortunately, the only company that made them for Rockys (Fourtraks) no longer makes or stocks them. They are available on the second hand market, but are very rare, as the owners know what they have, and dont want to give them up. There seems to be a fair bit of advice on the various boards regarding replaceing the auto free wheeling hubs with manual ones.

my 4 wheel drive
thanks for the reply , but when I get stuck I have a rear wheel spinning , the front prop shaft turning but both front wheels static. The reason I thought it might be electrical is that someone suggested a modification so a lady could use low ratio and switch off the autohubs for towing up a steep twisty concrete drive in 2 wheel drive.Anyone got any knowledge of this
my 4 wheel drive
Hi, Yes I'm the one who did the mod to enable low ratio 2WD. (I'm no lady though!). However, mine is a different transfer case to yours so the electrical 4WD selector does not apply. I think you are on the right track when you suggested it might be front diff or hubs. If the front prop is turning at the same speed as the rear one thats all it can be isn't it?
,My hubs
Hi delp, sorry about the confusion with a lady ,I am rapidly coming to the conclusion that fitting manual hubs will solve my problem. Scanning the problems site users report they seem a bit of a weakness . Havent seen anyone complaining of broken halfshafts which would have the same effect. Fair play to the 4trak , I have been regularly pulling trailers around fields assumming I was in 4 wheeldrive and it was only backing a massive 8 wheel trailer up a slope that got it stuck and I realised only a back wheel was spinning.I look forward to trying the beast with 4 wheel drive.
No 4 wheel drive
I would head for front hubs not locking in myself, usually down to lack of use they seize up, try stripping them down and freeing off the little fingers that should move freely outwards to lock the hubs.
