Oil leak

Forum:

I have just bought a 93 Sportrak ELXI. I had it checked, changed oils etc. The gearbox needed 1.5l oil, but now I have an oil leak which seems to be somewhere near where the gear sticks come out underneath(?). Any suggestions what to do as there was´t a leak before the oil top up.

I had a leak which was maddening to trace, it turned out it came from higher up on the rocker cover at the rear which dribbled down into that area.

But to start, get a can of Gunk, and spray it all around the area, leave it for 20 mins, then wash it off. Get some cheapo talcum powder, (Not flour, it smells when it gets warm) and chuck that all over when it's dry. You should easily be able to trace it's path and where it's spewing from.
Are all the filler bolts tight?

Oil leak

Check that the gear box breathers are not blocked. This will cause oil to leak from the weakest seal when the box warms up.:)

Re: Oil Leak

1.5l is a large amount for a top up, are you sure there was any oil in to start with? If the 'box is similar to the fourtrak, the lever fits in to housing which bolts to the top of the 'box. There is a paper gasket here which can leak. The breather is a 45cm or so length of clear plastic tube which pushes on to a short metal pipe sticking out of the top of the 'box somewhere towards the rear.
