Idiots Guide Requested

Forum:

I've just bought a Fourtrak 1990 2.0 EL as I need to do some light off-road stuff.

Having never owned a 4X4 I was wondering if someone could give me an absolute idiots guide to what settings should be used in what situation? For example - deep muddy rutted field - first move small lever to 4H, then press switch on dash and then move hubs to 'lock'.

I really am that clueless! Any help would be much appreciated....

Thanks.

First off, you should not hav

First off, you should not have 4H on the small lever, and also have a 4H button on the dash. It should only be one or the other, unless it has been retrofitted with an earlier transfer case. The levr should have 2H,N,4L. Also, check your front hubs, in the centre of the front wheels. Does it say free/lock, or 2wd/4wd there, and is there a knob in the very centre that turns? If so, you have free wheeling hubs, and these must be locked (lock or 4wd) before you can have 4wd.
In most situations, try locked hubs, 4H first. If extra torque is needed, change to 4L. Be prepared to change gears fairly quickly in 4L if any speed is needed.
Anyone else care to add anything I have missed.

Cheers
David

I see...

Sorry, you're right - the lever just has 2H, N, 4L on it. There is a 4H button on the dash. The front hubs have free and lock on them.

So ultimately, before I go off road I need to twist the hubs to lock and then press the button on the dashboard. You suggest starting off in 4H, so in this case do I leave the lever in 2H as long as the dashboard switch is on? I'm assuming if this is the case and I then realise I need low ratio I just move the lever to 4L?

Yet another silly question - apart from reversing all the above actions do I need to do anything specific to go back to two wheel drive?

Thanks very much for your advice - I did warn it would need to be idiot proof!!!

You have it correct. If you a

You have it correct. If you are travelling a shortish distance between 4wding, there is no need to unlock the hubs. In fact, they can stay locked permenantly, but this defeats their purpose.

Aha - I see...

Brilliant - thanks very much for your help....

what happens if you put 4wd i

what happens if you put 4wd in but dont lock the hubs? just curious, does it just use 2wd or does it basically eventually break the diff or what?

Essentially, you are still in

Essentially, you are still in 2wd. You will have drive through the front propshaft, diff and axles, but, with the hubs unlocked, this drive will not be transmitted to the front wheels. It wont do any harm, but is of no use. However, putting it in 4L, with the hubs unlocked, can be very useful. It is still in 2wd, because of the unlocked hubs, but the slow speed is extremely useful when reversing trailers, or needing to travel forward very slowly and precisely. Its also useful when pulling a heavy load up a steep slope which has good traction.
