removing rear hubs on sportrak

Forum:

how do you get he rear hubs off a sportrak, i have taken the wheel off and the rim around the brake drum and the four little nuts taken out of the back of brake drum but it sort of pulls ou a bit now but not all the way any tips?

if poss in dead simple terms cheers

not too sue

I can not honestly say I know, but on fortraks and many other 4x4 you just need tp physically knock it off. There usally is some king of retainer ring that sits in the axle....just try giving it a tap with hyde or nylon hammer.

When I did the oil seals on m

When I did the oil seals on my 4track I 'pulled' the half shafts from the axle housing. The backing plate for the brake drum (I think thats what you mean by hub)was attached to the half shaft.

Why do u want to remove these 'hubs' m8 Unknw

Are you doing oil seals Unknw If so the inner bearing and oil seal sit behind a retainer ring that needs to be ground off and replaced with a new one on reassembly.

To remove the retainer ring grind it (being very careful not to grind into the half shaft)then use a cold chisel or the like to knock the ring off the shaft.
After replacing the oil seal (if thats what you are doing)the new retainer ring has to be heated till it expands and slips over the end of the shaft...use a cooker ring for this and a length of metal tubing to whack the ring down the lenghth of the shaft.Be quick before the ring cools and contracts. By the way, I would change the rear inner bearings at the same time. Bearings ,retainer rings and oil seals can be purchased from Millners offroad...link under parts suppliers at top of this page.

sorry for shit wording, yes t

sorry for shit wording, yes the back plate of the drum needs to come off, which the wheel hub is part of isnt it?

im getting the oil seal and bearing done by a mechanic but i need to take the shaft out to take it to him, but i cant get it off cause there is 1 fat and 2 thin leads going into the back of it. i got no idea what these are, i assume at least one has brake fluid in, or how to get them off, could you tell me how these come off and what they are (just for reference) and is anything going to spurt out of them or anything when i take them off. once these are off does it just pull out of the axle housing? i cant see anything else holding it in. hope this makes things more clear. thanks a lot

and sorry to sound silly but is it just simply axle oil i ask for at the shop or is there more to it than that. cheers

Hi MateThe back plate doe

Hi Mate

The back plate does not need to come off...it stays connected to the half shaft.

The leads you talk about...two should be a metal pipes (quite thin)
These are the brake pipes that carry the brake fluid to the brake cylinder that pushes the brake shoes onto the drum. You need to undo the nuts on the end of these pipes to seperate them from the backing plate. You will have leakage of brake fluid when you undo them..just put a jar or the like under the pipes as you undo these nuts...
There should also be a plastic shrouded 'lead' going into the back of the backing plate ..this is the handbrake cable...disconnect this at the front of the backing plate...you would have done this when you strip down the shoes and all associated springs etc...its a bugger to get off and back on as I remeber.

undo the 4 bolts on the back of the backing plate.

Once everything is stripped and undone you need to attach some kind of puller to the wheel studs (the threaded studs that the wheel gets bolted to). I made my own..its quite easy or you can hire them.
They are usually constructed with a sliding 'hammer'which you use to 'knock' the halfshaft out of the axle housing..takes a hefty blow to get them out...do you have a manual ?..cos it takes you through this whole process step by step...its quite easy really.

As far as oil goes ask for gear or differential oil..Halfords do it...once all back on you can top up the axle oil by undoing the large nut on the back of the rear differential housing...good luck..let us know how you get on.

The axle halfshaft, backing plate and 'hub' all come out as one piece.
