FUEL LEAK

Forum:

Hi i have what looks like a full on fuel leak!
there is fuel along the chassi around and under the tank pipes on the drivers side of the truck!

a mechanic has just told me to drop the tank out and see if its rusty, also replace all the pipes to and from the tank! it looks like the fuel pipes have had it!

any advice would be nice? is this easy to do? how long would it take? what sort of pipe should i replace it with? would air line pip be ok for the breathers? fuel pipe i will use for the fuel flow pipes?

what if the tank has rusted out? can it be patched with resin or such like?

thanks

Its a known problem. The design of the tank and mounts allows dirt/mud to accumulate above the crossmembers, between the cross members and the tank. It stays wet, and the tank, being thinner, rusts first. I usually drop my tank every year or so to clean the garbage out. And make sure there is a good coating of underbody sealer.

Depending on how bad the hole(s) are, they can be soldered. But, the repair area has to be spotlessly clean. Cleaning usually opens up more pinprick holes that are almost rusted through. You can solder each one individually, or patch with sheetmetal over the lot. Use a very big soldering iron, or you can do it with a flame, after draining the diesel, of course. Diesels are reasonably forgiving when it comes to using flame on tank repairs. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES USE FLAME ON A PETROL TANK. That should go without saying.
To drop the tank is easy. 5 bolts hold it up, 2 at the front, 3 at the rear. Then the filler hose, then breathers and supply and return lines, then the sender wire which is right on top. Drain the tank first to reduce the weight. Mark the supply and return and breather hoses so you get them back correctly. Timne to complete the pullout and refit, about an hour or so, plus repair time.

Cheers
David
