starter motor problem

Forum:

i this is my first posting, so i!d like to say hello to everyone, i have owned
7 fourtraks in the past, & never had any problems realy. till now, i think its the starter motor, when i turn the key the lights come on as usual, then
a bit further to start her up nothing happens, the lights dont dim,so i dont think its shorting, if i put her into gear & rock it, it will start, "sometimes" it also seems slower turning over compared to my preiveious
daihatsus, any comments most welcome

Sounds like the starter it se

Sounds like the starter it self is breaking down inside. New brushes, or rewinding the motor may solve the problem. But much simpler to just change the whole unit for a second hand one, if you can find one you'd trust.
The slow turning over could be a bad earth. But the rocking back and forth to get it to go sounds more like a dead spot on the motor it self.

Any veiws expresed in this thread by me are purely from my own experience, and (sometimes) falible memory. Hope my comments help, but please don't take them as gospel.

Might be. Or it could be the switch on the transfur box is brocken. Or a dodgy wire/conection between the two.

not seen a light on our 89 rocky but 4wd works in both high and low range , where is it supposed to be?

a green light (think its green) comes on under the rev counter, same as a blue light comes on for high beam under the speedo. it says 4x4 above it i think!
mine dont work either, the light i mean. and the wires are a mess on the gear box, someone has fudged wire crips on things, so i left it to it.

anyone wana ride in my hovercraft!

starter motor

got in the truck this morning, (covered in ice) & it started first time, i!me baffled, put all my tackle in the truck last night to go shooting, & it was dead, kicked it punched it rocked it, & gave up, so i!me on the lookout for a starter motor today

Had exactly the same problem.

Had exactly the same problem...remove the starter motor and take it to any reputable 'rewind' company...look in yellow pages under 'rewinds'.....get it refurbished and it will be like new...costs lots less than a new starter motor and more reliable than a second hand one you dont know.

Drive-dog

There is a possibility that the 'drive-dog' on the end of the starter shaft is stuck. Shaking the car often frees the drive-dog but after use soon gets re-stuck. [The bit that spins and engages in the flywheel]. Before exchanging for another, try cleaning and lubricating [light oil] the shaft/drive-dog.
Whilst removed, power the starter to see if it operates. If its 'dead' its not a difficult task replacing the carbon brushes. However, this assumes the windings are not broken ... give it a good sniff ... does it smell burned? If so replace with a reconditioned starter.
