Jumping out of first gear

Forum:

Hi,

We have got a 96 Fourtrak Forester and are having problems with it jumping out of first gear in 4WD when going down a steep hill.

Please help as still under warranty!!

Mine has that problem as well...

Its a common fault for the Rocky/Fourtrack/Rugger/F series, Happens on mine when in 4wd low range crawling up or down a hill...it will just pop out of gear and freewheel

This apparantly is a known weak point in the transfer case and or gearbox, I have been told its worn syncromesh in either of these, alternatively it may be the rubber boot around the transfer case lever.

I experimented with an old landrover trick on the last 4wd club run ....wrap a bit of rope or bungee cord to hold the lever in place, if its under warranty try and get them to fix it as I suspect its not a cheap fix
